Author Tijuana Fulford is the founder and executive director of The Butterfly Effect Project, a nonprofit, community-oriented organization. It was Tijuana’s goal to start a program that would empower young girls by giving them the tools to achieve emotionally stable and self confident futures, in hopes of bringing forth a generation of women who are strong, independent and knowledgeable. The Butterfly Effect Project aspires to ensure that every girl enrolled in the program has a fair chance to broaden their horizons by eliminating obstacles such as mobility, cultural differences and finances. The Butterfly Effect Project started on March 8, 2014 with 8 girls that came from Riverhead and Flanders areas. The program has grown to over 500 girls (and boys) from Riverhead, Flanders, Calverton, Mastic, Shirley, Bellport, Westhampton, Peconic, Patchogue and West Islip in 17 different chapters.
Tijuana will be discussing her new book, My Fabricated Truth: The Time I Was Daddy's Little Girl which is about a young woman's journey regarding her sexuality, and all the different obstacles that come with finding your true self. Proceeds from book sales will benefit The Butterfly Effect Project.
Fulford's previous book, My Fabricated Truth: The Time My Mirror Deceived Me, will also be available. It explores the very layered issue of race within a family, and our society. The book asks penetrating questions, and invites readers to engage in courageous conversations.
