About the Author:
“I was born in Centerville, Iowa but was raised in Rock Island, Illinois and attended public schools there, graduating from Rock Island Senior High School in 1979. I was co-editor of The Crimson Crier, the school newspaper and was on the staff of the school’s yearbook, WatchTower. I attended Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois and graduated with an Associate Degree in Journalism, and was also the editor of The Chieftain, the weekly college paper. I worked at Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company, and Mid-American Energy Company for 38 years before retiring. Another local history project very dear to me was when I was asked to collaborate with Doug Frazer and Rick Miers, both RIHS alums, on a book on the history of Rock Island High School. The book, Rock Solid-Our History, is an exclusive book on its history, dating from 1857 to present. It featured interesting stories related to the school, plus was jam-packed with many photos. Because of that book, I realized that the Solomon Butler story needed to be told. The research and writing has been extremely rewarding, very eye-opening, and at times, very emotional. I'm pretty sure Sol would be humbled by the attention he is currently receiving.” -- David Sebben
