Though we may think only of Marin County's redwoods and surf, our coastal headlands and grass-covered ridges are California’s own remnant grasslands. Like the Great Plains, they are ancient, wind-scoured ecosystems that depend on fire, grazing, and water. As we move east, however, the North American grasslands that once covered vast areas of the central United States have become our most endangered ecosystems. Grassland rivers are crucial to plains ecosystems and no less endangered than the grasslands surrounding them.
Join George Frazier as he shares stories from his new book Riverine Dreams: Away to the Glorious and Forgotten Grassland Rivers of America. Traveling mainly by canoe, Frazier encountered strange riverine forests left over from the Ice Age, leviathan fish migrations, modern grizzlies roaming the plains, endangered plants as rare as mastodon ivory, and the audacious plan to return 10,000 bison to a Great Plains biosphere reserve. This journey takes Frazier across the North American interior where he uncovers a remarkable movement to celebrate and preserve these natural treasures—nothing less than a grassland river revival.
George Frazier is an author, environmental writer, and professor whose writing explores the intersections of nature, history, and place. His writing has appeared in National Parks Magazine, Wild Earth, and many other journals and magazines.
