About this Event

The Author Series Committee at the Detroit Public Library is honored to welcome Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson. She will be joining us to discuss her acclaimed book, We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance (2024, Seal Press). Black resistance to white supremacy is often reduced to a simple binary, between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolence and Malcolm X’s “by any means necessary.” In We Refuse, Dr. Carter Jackson urges us to move past this false choice, offering an unflinching examination of the breadth of Black responses to white oppression, particularly those pioneered by Black women. Clear-eyed, impassioned, and ultimately hopeful, We Refuse offers a fundamental corrective to the historical record, a love letter to Black resilience, and a path toward liberation.

This is NOT a ticketed event. Seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Copies of We Refuse will be available for purchase from Detroit's own Source Booksellers.
