The Roeliff Jansen Community Library is pleased to welcome local author Brian Schaefer for a special author talk on Sunday, February 8, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. Schaefer will discuss his debut novel, Town & Country (Simon & Schuster, 2025), and his journey from journalism to fiction.Set in the trendy rural town of Griffin, Town & Country explores the growing tensions between longtime residents and wealthy newcomers drawn to country living. As a contentious congressional race unfolds in this swing district, local pub owner and town supervisor Chip Riley faces off against Paul Banks, a young and affluent political outsider. Spanning six months from Memorial Day to Election Day, the novel traces the ripple effects of the campaign on families, friendships, and civic life, asking timely and enduring questions about belonging, community, and responsibility to one’s neighbors.
Brian Schaefer is a regular contributor to The New York Times and has written for The New Yorker, New York Magazine, and other publications. He is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Arts Journalism and was a finalist for the Livingston Award for International Reporting. Schaefer earned his MFA in creative writing from Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv. He and his husband divide their time between New York City and the Hudson Valley. Town & Country is his first novel.
