Reading: "New Animal" by Eleanor Keisman
Come join us for a engaging evening at Hafi Books + Coffee as we dive into the world of New Animal. The talented author Eleanor Keisman will start us off with a 30-minute reading from her newly released novella after which there will be plenty of time for discussion and a Q&A.
The story follows the experiences of a wolf, a wolfdog, and a man, navigating survival in a near-future, climate ravaged Yukon. Although climate change is the vehicle for the story, there is a strong focus on the sense of identity lost uniquely by each character: The wolf from his pack and the natural order as he knew it; the wolfdog from his origin species; and the man from modern economic and societal values. They come together in an unexpected circumstance, and seek to recreate their own irretrievably lost connections.
" Eleanor Keisman's New Animal is no polemic, it is not a call to action-it is a deeply emotional and stupendously powerful paean to the planet and all who depend on it. It is the sort of book that does more than simply make you think-although it does that-it makes you feel the sorts of things that we read great literature to feel: love, hate, empathy, and finally understanding. While Keisman never explicitly advocates taking a particular action, it is impossible to read her story and not feel compelled to protect this orbiting blue orb we call home."
