James Locklear is the author of In the Country of the Kaw, published in 2024 by the University Press
of Kansas. His book is a personal exploration of the realm of the Kaw River, which presides over
an expansive watershed that includes parts of the High Plains, Smoky Hills, Flint Hills, and other
regions of Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas. Locklear’s book brings to light the natural and cultural
wonders found within the watershed and how people past and present have interacted with the
land. Locklear, who grew up in Kansas City, is a botanist and recently retired as Director of
Conservation at Omaha’s Lauritzen Gardens. He previously served as director of the Dyck
Arboretum of the Plains in Hesston, Kansas and director of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum.
In the Country of the Kaw draws on over thirty years of observation and travel throughout the
region. It is a finalist for a High Plains International Book Award and has been called “a singular
and significant addition to the literature of the Great Plains.”
