About this Event
Paul Alexander—author of heralded lives of Sylvia Plath and J. D. Salinger — will be at The Garden District Book Shop March 13 to celebrate the release of his latest book Bitter Crop: The Heartache and Triumph of Billie Holiday’s Last Year, a revelatory look at the tumultuous life of a jazz legend and American cultural icon.In the first biography of Billie Holiday in more than two decades, Alexander gives readers an unconventional portrait of arguably America’s most eminent jazz singer. He shrewdly focuses on the last year of her life—with relevant flashbacks to provide context—to evoke and examine the persistent magnificence of Holiday’s artistry when it was supposed to have declined, in the wake of her drug abuse, relationships with violent men, and run-ins with the law.
The evening will kick off at 6:00 PM with Alexander sitting down with the Grammy® winning producer, musician, writer, and record executive Scott Billington to discuss his book and Holiday’s life. The conversation will be followed by a brief Q&A and then Alexander will be available to chat with guests and personalize copies of his book.
Entry to the event is free and open to the public but the shop encourages interested parties to RSVP to ensure entry and reserve a copy of the book on Eventbrite as space is limited. Additional copies will be available to purchase.
