Page 158 Books is excited to welcome author Andrew K. Clark to discuss his debut novel, Where Dark Things Grow. Andrew will be joined in conversation by Heather Bell Adams.
Magical realism, horror, and Southern Gothic permeate Andrew K. Clark's novel, Where Dark Things Grow. Leo is a troubled fifteen-year-old growing up in rural, Depression-era Appalachia. When his father goes missing, Leo’s attempts to help his family and find his father bring him into contact with mythical beasts, alchemists, prostitutes, and Jacob’s ghost, who may or may not be an evil spirit. Taylor Brown (Rednecks) calls Where Dark Things Grow "a high and haunting tale of highland lore that burns with forces both dark and light, rendered with a poet's eye for detail and wild sparks of wonder."
Andrew K. Clark’s poetry collection, Jesus in the Trailer, was published by Main Street Rag Press. Where Dark Things Grow is his debut novel. A Western North Carolina native, Clark lives outside Asheville, NC and serves as a regional representative for the North Carolina Writers Network. Connect with him at andrewkclark.com.
Heather Bell Adams is the author of two award-winning novels, Maranatha Road and The Good Luck Stone. Her short stories have won the Doris Betts Fiction Prize and James Still Fiction Prize, and she served as North Carolina's 2022 Piedmont Laureate and South Carolina's 2023 Pat Conroy Writer in Residence. Her novella, Starring Marilyn Monroe as Herself, is forthcoming from Regal House.
