Written by 15 iconic authors, this vibrant, heartwarming collection of middle-grade stories and poems celebrates the joy, strength, and experience of Black girlhood. Edited by Leah Johnson, the award-winning author of You Should See Me in a Crown, which was named one of the “100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time”, this anthology published under Disney’s new Freedom Fire imprint includes stories from a diverse group of finalists for the Carnegie Medal, National Book Award, New York Times Bestselling authors and award-winners including Ibi Zoboi, Sharon M. Draper, singer Amerie, Dhonielle Clayton, as well as cover art from Caldecott winner Vashti Harrison.
About Leah Johnson:
Leah Johnson is an eternal midwesterner and author of award-winning books for children and young adults. Her bestselling debut YA novel, You Should See Me in a Crown, was a Stonewall Honor Book, and the inaugural Reese's Book Club YA pick. In 2021, TIME named You Should See Me in a Crown one of the 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time. Her debut middle grade, Ellie Engle Saves Herself was published by Disney-Hyperion in May 2023. When she’s not writing, you can find her at Loudmouth Books, her Indianapolis-based independent bookstore that specializes in highlighting the work of marginalized authors and uplifting banned or challenged books.
About Elise Bryant:
Elise Bryant is the NAACP Image Award-nominated author of Happily Ever Afters, One True Loves, Reggie and Delilah’s Year of Falling, and It’s Elementary. For many years, Elise had the joy of working as a special education teacher, and now she spends her days reading, writing, and eating dessert. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Long Beach, California.
