Kia Ora OffGrid Whanau. Come and spend a night with us at Pāhautea hut on Mount Pirongia! This advanced tramping track is not for the faint of heart, and is suited only to experienced trampers with a high level of fitness, but is a challenge worth conquering if you feel up to it!
We will be tramping through lush native forests via the Tirohanga track to reach the Pāhautea hut. On day 2 we shall return to our vehicles via the Mahaukura track. There is a lot of elevation, undulation, and some sections require you to climb up ropes. Please take this into consideration when evaluating whether you will be okay to attend this trip. The trip is taking place during the middle of winter, we do expect it to be cold in the hut at night so please follow the recommended gear list.

This trip has limited spots and we cannot guarantee you will get a place on it. We operate a first-in, first-served policy with all our OffGrid trips and we apologise if we cannot make space.

Game Plan:
Day 1 - Saturday 13th July:
8.00 am - Meet at AUT City Campus
8.30 am - Leave AUT City Campus - Head to Mount Pirongia
10:00 am - Stop at Woolworths Te Rapa for food/gear
10:45 am - Depart Te Rapa, drive towards Grey Road car park.
11.20 am - Begin walk to Pāhautea Hut via Tirohanga track from the Grey Road car park.
1.00pm - Short lunch Break
1.30pm - Continue walking
5.30 pm - Arrive at Pāhautea Hut, chill out time!
9.00 pm - Quiet hours
Day 1 - Sunday 14th July:
8.00 am - Wake up & breakfast
9.30 am - Depart from hut, head back to car park via Mahaukura track
12:00 pm - Short lunch Break
12:30 pm - Continue walking
3.30 pm - Arrive at Grey Road car park
4.15pm - Optional early dinner stop in Hamilton
5.00pm - Depart Hamilton, head back to AUT city campus
6.30 pm - Home time!!

A 60-80L Tramping bag
Tramping boots with ankle support

Cooking stove & cooking utensils - there are no cooking facilities at the hut

Waterproof/hiking pants (please no cotton pants/jeans)

Spare plastic bags for dirty laundry or rubbish (yes, we will be tidy Kiwis and take whatever we bring up back down the mountain)
Personal First Aid kit & medication (eg epipens, pain relief ect).
Toiletries i.e., tissue paper, tooth brush, toothpaste, soap, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, period care…
