We are excited to announce that the Australian Internet Governance Forum (auIGF), formerly known as NetThing, will take place in Melbourne from 28-29 October 2024.
The overarching theme of the event is Connecting local to global - Connecting Australian community and policy debates to the region and the world.
This year's event will be held as a hybrid forum at the Rydges Hotel, providing both in-person and online participation options.
The auIGF is a premier event that brings together a diverse and multidisciplinary community of stakeholders to discuss governance and public policy issues related to the internet in Australia. Modelled on the global Internet Governance Forum (IGF), the auIGF embraces the multi-stakeholder model, fostering an open and inclusive platform that amplifies diverse voices, strengthens cooperation and partnerships between different groups, and promotes community collaboration.
About the Australian Internet Governance Forum (auIGF)
The Australian Internet Governance Forum (auIGF) began in 2012 and ran annually until 2016, providing a crucial platform for discussing internet-related public policy issues in Australia. After a two-year hiatus, key figures from the internet and domain name sectors came together, with the support of the Australian Cyber Ambassador, to consider reviving this important forum. This led to the creation of a new forum, later referred to as NetThing, which successfully operated from 2019 to 2023.
In 2024, the Multi-Stakeholder Steering Committee (MSSC) that convened NetThing decided to reinstate its original name as the Australian Internet Governance Forum to reaffirm the connection to the global IGF structure.
The auIGF aims to:
- Build Australia’s internet community so that it includes a diversity of interests, experiences and views
- Gather together the Australian multistakeholder community and hold interactive and participative internet policy discussions
- Have those policy conversations provide a foundation for robust and visionary government, industry and community decision making in Australia as well as giving Australia-based participants a strong basis for contributing to global policy making.
