The Austin and Saltillo partnership was established on Nov. 7, 1968, and has included 55 years of diplomatic missions, cultural and education exchanges, public safety and training programs, commerce, and art exhibits.
The ties between the two cities began as early as 1689 when both were bordering territories in New Spain. In 1821, Mexico achieved its independence from Spain, and four years later, the Mexican constitution officially created the state of Coahuila and Tejas with the capitol in Saltillo. These two regions remained one state until 1835. In 1836, Texas gained its independence from Mexico, but the Spanish language and many traditions and customs remain part of our early frontier legacy. Join us and celebrate this important anniversary!
