Rich Del Carlo, who has been involved in Sandpoint’s Christmas Bird Count for 20 years, will present the history and importance of the holiday count which has been taking place nationwide since 1900. In addition to the background of this event, Del Carlo will explain how the teams are organized into count circles and assigned to destinations up to 14 miles from Sandpoint. Each team is led by experienced birders with spotting scopes.Bird count information is shared with the Audubon Society, adding to their data base from 1901 to the present, providing a valuable picture of changes in bird populations for the past 125 years.
A certified arborist and owner/operator of Peregrine Tree and Landscape in Sandpoint, Del Carlo has been interested in birds most of his life. His travels are always bird related. He has recently returned from a birding excursion to Columbia.
How to attend:
Held at the East Bonner County Library (1407 Cedar St., Sandpoint, Idaho) the meeting will begin with socializing at 9:30 am, the program following at 10:00. Admission is free and open to the public.
