Synopsis:
Sam Shepard’s True West centers on Austin and Lee, two brothers with a volatile and estranged relationship. Both are in their mother’s home while she is on vacation in Alaska. Austin makes a living as a screenwriter and is about to have the most important meeting of his career. He is currently house sitting in his mother’s home. The rugged Lee has returned from five years of drifting and thieving. Neither brother intended on running into the other. A chance meeting becomes an antagonistic examination of sibling rivalry, masculinity, and the metaphorical representations of the Old West and The New West collide.
Characters:
Austin - A strait-laced, Ivy League graduate working as a screenwriter. He’s working in his mother’s home on the eve of the biggest meeting of his life. He has a wife and children back home in Northern California.
Lee - Austin’s brother. A drifter and a thief. He’s been gone for years and just happened to arrive at his mother’s house while Austin was there. He intends to loot the neighborhood of household appliances for quick cash. To say he is a stark contrast to Austin would be an understatement.
Saul Kimmer - A movie producer who sees promise in Austin. Saul’s not meant to be a strict parody of a Hollywood producer, but he is certainly motivated by profit.
Mom - Returns home from Alaska in the final moments. She is aware she has no power over her sons.
