ABOUT THE PLAY
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a young woman returning home must be in want of a husband.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a writer adapting Jane Austen's unfinished novel for the stage must be in want of an ending.

Adapted, with a twist or two (or three!) from Jane Austen, The Watsons throws us into a familiar set-up. A young woman must choose between three very different suitors, while also dealing with the judgements and “helpful” advice of friends and family. But what happens when Austen’s plot runs out and there is still well over half the play to go?

Peeking under the bonnet of Jane Austen, The Watsons is a warm, funny and surprising play about a group of characters without an author to guide them. Without Austen, who will write the happy ending now?

ROLES

Emma Watson (F 20s-30s) – a passionate young woman, intelligent, sensitive and worried about being trapped into a world with no choices

Elizabeth Watson (F 20s-40s) – Emma’s older sister, sensible, always does the right thing, secretly bored of that

Margaret Watson (F 20s-30s) – Emma’s younger sister, the apple of many men’s eyes and rather pleased with herself for being so

Mr Robert Watson (M 40s+) – Emma’s uncle, sensible and rather under the thrall of his wife

Mrs Robert (F 40s+) – Emma’s aunt, gossipy and eager to find a good place in society

Nanny (F 40s+) – Emma’s old Nanny turned housekeeper, a woman of hidden depths

Tom Musgrave (M 20s-40s) – rogueish, and possibly unsuitable, suitor to Emma

Lord Osborne (M 20s-40s) – shy, noble suitor to Emma

Lady Osborne (F 40s +) – domineering, foreboding mother to Lord Osborne

Miss Osborne (F 20s) – flighty younger daughter to Lady Osborne

Mr Howard (20s-40s) – po-faced, serious-minded local clergyman and suitor to Emma

Charles Howard (M/F teens playing age) – young brother to Mr Howard,

Bertie (20s-30s) – romantic soldier, potential suitor for everyone
