SYNOPSIS:
Set in 1979 Terre Haute, Indiana, an aspiring architect, Willum Cubbert, has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly on the night of his birthday party. His delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd” —a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence, and less tact. The party turns from celebration to chaos, which continues after Rick moves in and outstays his welcome with a vengeance.
ALL OF THE ROLES ARE AVAILABLE FOR CASTING:
WILLUM CUBBERT: (34-40) An architect designing a hotel for the overbearing Mr. Waldgrave. He is kind and intelligent but lacks the backbone to stand up for himself.
TANSY McGINNIS: (34-40) A smart and successful woman who is idealistic and upbeat. She is romantically involved with Willum, but is moving to Washington DC for her career.
AXEL HAMMOND: (34-40) A theatre critic, who also happens to be Willum’s best friend. He’s a bit pretentious, especially when he’s had a drink or two and is always armed with a sarcastic comment.
RICK STEDMAN: (34-40) “The Nerd”, a chalk inspector who is oblivious to insults and lacks manners and sensitivity. Rick is hopelessly clueless and a source of chaos, amusement, and frustration to everyone he meets.
WARNOCK WALDGRAVE: (50s) An overbearing business man and owner of 8 hotels. He lacks creativity and does not smile.
CLELIA WALDGRAVE: (40s) Warnock’s high-strung and put-upon wife. Suppressing her emotions, Clelia finds solace in breaking objects to release her stress.
THOR WALDGRAVE: (8-10) The Waldgraves’ chaos-inducing terror of a son, who spends much of the play hiding in a closet or bedroom.
