AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
Auditions will be round robin style reading sides. Please visit our sign up genius and pick a two hour slot (one only). Sides will be emailed June 5th, 2024 to only those signed up to audition.
ROLES: Setting - Samson, Indiana. 1862.e
Jayne: Late 20s. Female
Bold, entrepreneurial, and forward-focused. Jayne feels confined by societal restrictions but dreams of traveling the world. She stays home to care for her frail sister. Ambitious and determined, she balances her adventurous spirit with deep loyalty to her family.
Olivia (Olive) Late 20s. Female.
Olivia is a shut-in who fears the outside world. She serves as the voice of reason to Jayne's adventurous ideas. Frail and feminine, she has the ability to commune with the dead.
Maurice: Late 20s. Male.
Maurice is a mysterious magician who arrives just in time to help Jayne with the seance business. Enigmatic and skilled, he brings magic and intrigue.
Teen Jayne: 15. Female.
Teen Jayne is bold and forward-focused. Raised in an upper-class household, she is well-read and speaks with maturity and conviction.She is adventurous, ambitious, and adores her sister.
Teen Olivia: 17. Female.
Teen Olivi is frail and prim. Raised in an upper-class household, she speaks with maturity and wisdom.
Morrison: 20. Male.
Olivia's romantic interest from her youth.
Mother: Middle Years. Female.
Protective of her children and heritage. Bullied by Father.
Father: Middle Years. Male.
The father is a bullying, religious, and judgmental figure. His strict nature leaves a lasting impact on Jayne and Olivia, shaping their later years.
Aunt Beatrice: Middle Years. Female.
The imposing and scary aunt from Jayne and Olivia's youth.
Mrs. Whitely: 45+. Female
Mrs. Whitely is a judgmental customer of Jayne's post-mortem photography business. She upholds old-fashioned standards on women's behavior and is vocal about her conservative views. Her rigid nature reflects societal pressures of the era
Mr. Barrymore: 50+. Male.
Mr. Barrymore is a prominent man attending the seance. Full of bluster and self-importance, he commands attention. In mourning for his beloved mother, he is both skeptical and intrigued.
Synopsis:
Set in 1862 during the Civil War, "The Amazing Seance Sisters" follows the story of Jayne and Olivia, sisters in their late 20s, who, after their post-mortem photography business fails, turn to seances to make ends meet. Desperate to save their family home from being claimed by Jayne’s deceased husband’s family and to afford treatment for Olivia’s illness, they embark on a new venture. Olivia, who believes she can commune with the dead, and Jayne, the entrepreneurial spirit, start their seance business in their small town.
Their situation becomes more complex with the arrival of Maurice, a mysterious magician who offers his assistance. As he helps transform their home into a proper seance parlor, old memories and buried secrets resurface, threatening to tear the sisters apart. Jayne dreams of adventure and travel, while Olivia, a shut-in, clings to their home. Jayne loves Olivia but feels she is an anchor preventing her from living the life she wants.
