MONOLOGUE:
London. 1935. August. I’d been back three months in the old country and frankly wondering why. Leaving me. Richard Hannay. Thirty-seven years old. Back home. Which was no home at all if you want to know. I had a scotch and soda, picked up an evening paper, put it back. Full of elections and wars and rumours of wars. I thought who the bloody hell cares frankly? What does it all matter? What happens to anyone? What happens to me? No-one'd miss me. I wouldn't miss me. I could quite easily just - Then I thought pull yourself together man! Find something to do, I know! A West End Show! That should do the trick!
SHOW SYNOPSIS:
Mixing spy thriller with hilarious farce, The 39 Steps by Patrick Barlow and John Buchan is a fast-paced, wildly inventive comedy based on Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film. When ordinary man Richard Hannay is thrust into a world of espionage, murder, and mystery, he finds himself on the run from shadowy agents in a nonstop adventure across the UK. Featuring just a handful of actors playing dozens of roles, The 39 Steps delights with quick changes, witty dialogue, and clever staging that keeps audiences laughing from start to finish. This madcap theatrical experience is a treat for fans of comedy, suspense, and pure theatrical magic.
CHARACTERS:
Richard Hannay - Male presenting, any race or ethnicity. He is a bored 1930 era leading man type, charming, sophisticated, and effortless stylish. Has a sharp mind and quick thinking.
Annabella/Pamela/Margaret - Female-presenting, any races and ethnicities. A dynamic track requiring one performer to play three distinct roles: Annabella, an exotic Russian spy; Margaret, a Scottish farmer who feels trapped in her marriage; and Pamela, a refined 1930s ingénue. Requires strong versatility in accents and characterization. Must be a skilled physical comedian capable of bringing three distinctly different characters to life.

These two performers take on several characters, embodying everyone the leads are not. Must possess sharp comedic instincts, high energy, and physical agility. A mastery of accents, vocal range, and rapid character shifts is essential. Think quick, move fast, and be fearless.
