AUDITIONS: Silent Sky — Shatterbox Theatre (2026 Season) Shatterbox Theatre is thrilled to announce auditions for Silent Sky, the breathtaking and heartfelt play by Lauren Gunderson.
Silent Sky follows the true story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, whose work in the early 1900s led to one of the most important discoveries in astronomy. Alongside the brilliant women of the Harvard Observatory, Henrietta challenges the limitations placed on her gender and reshapes humanity’s understanding of the vast universe. This is a moving, funny, and inspiring story about curiosity, love, sisterhood, and the stars that connect us all.

Henrietta Leavitt

Historical figure: Born 1868 — began work at Harvard Observatory in her mid-20s
Description: Fiercely smart, funny, curious, and overflowing with determination. Spilling over her own traditionalism. Wears a period hearing aid.
Margaret Leavitt
Age in play: 20s–30s
Historical basis: Inspired by Henrietta’s real sisters (particularly Grace Leavitt, close in age)
Description: A sweet, creative homebody. A composer. Must sing a hymn a cappella; piano skills would be an asset but not necessary.
Peter Shaw
Age in play: 20s–30s
Historical basis: Fictional character
Description: The head astronomer’s apprentice… and “the man.” Earnest, unintentionally condescending, but grows curious, supportive, and passionate.
Annie Jump Cannon
Age in play: 40s
Historical figure: Born 1863 — a leading astronomer in her 40s at the time depicted
Description: Strict supervisor, a confident leader, and a fiercely loyal friend. Terse and sure. Grows into a firebrand and a force in the field.
Williamina Fleming
Age in play: 40s–50s
Historical figure: Born 1857 — established astronomer in her mid-40s to 50s during the events
Description: Smart as a whip, warm, and boisterous. A Scottish immigrant known for cataloguing thousands of stars and contributing major discoveries. (Read without an accent, or with a light Scottish accent if comfortable.)
