Callbacks: Wednesday, December 18 from 6:00-8:00 pm
at The Little Theatre’s offices, 419 N. Spruce Street
in downtown Winston-Salem
There are roles available for 2 women (ages 20s-60s) and 8 men (ages 20s-70s).
Please read the character descriptions and performance schedule below. Auditions will consist of reading from sides. Please bring your calendar and be prepared to list all potential conflicts for the rehearsal and performance period.
The first read through will tentatively be held Monday, December 30 at 6:30 pm, and rehearsals will generally be held Monday-Friday evenings. This is subject to change depending on the cast’s availability.

SHOW DESCRIPTION
It’s 1927 and Ma Rainey, also known as the "Mother of the Blues," is recording updated versions of some of her classic songs in a run-down studio in Chicago. Passionate and headstrong, Ma Rainey battles to maintain authority over her own music, even as her arrogant trumpet player, Levee, aspires to make a name for himself in the music industry.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Ma Rainey (Female, 50s-60s) Black, a popular blues singer.
Sturdyvant (Male, 40s - 50s) White, owner of the Chicago recording studio where Ma Rainey is recording.
Irvin (Male, 40s-50s) White, Ma Rainey’s manager and Sturdyvant’s partner.
Policeman (Male, 20s-40s) White.
Dussie Mae (Female, 20s-30s) Black, Ma Rainey’s lover.
Sylvester (Male, early 20s) Black, Ma Rainey’s nephew. He has a stutter.
Ma Rainey’s Band (Actors auditioning for these roles: knowledge of respective instruments is a plus; they are not played onstage):
Cutler (Male, 50s) Black, trombone and guitar player.
Toledo (Male, 60s-70s) Black, piano player.
Slow Drag (Male, 50s) Black, the bass player.
Levee (Male, 30s) Black, the trumpet player.
