Rehearsals: March 9-April 16, 2026 Actors must be available for all tech week rehearsals (April 6-16) and performances (April 17-26).
Stuck in the desert of a happily ever after that is nothing like they dreamed, Bessie, a chronic do-gooder, and Albert Johnson, a wishful Quixote, try anything to prop up the facade of their marriage. But when Bessie brings home a less-than-acceptable house guest, their lost dreams begin to consume their fragile reality. This surrealist play tells the fictionalized true story of Scotty’s Castle and the couple from 1910s Chicago who built a mansion for a con man in the middle of Death Valley, CA.
Director: Sandra Renick
What To Expect: This show includes some mature themes. At the audition, you’ll be asked to read from the script; sides will be provided. Dialects are not required. In-person auditions are strongly encouraged.
If you need to submit a video audition, please prepare a 1 to 2 minute monologue that shows both dramatic and comedic range, or two short contrasting pieces. Video submissions are due by 5:00 PM on Sunday, February 15. Please submit to [email protected]
ACTOR REQUIREMENTS: The director is seeking collaborative actors who enjoy bringing out the humor and comedic beats woven throughout this dramatic piece. This play calls for physically engaged actors and may include standing on furniture, kneeling, climbing steps, and brief floor work, with safety adjustments made as needed, so please note any physical
limitations on your audition form. The story also explores themes of trauma related to a train crash and the loss of a child. Actors should feel comfortable working with these topics.
● BESSIE JOHNSON (Female 28-55). "Knits, quilts, prepares bandages, volunteers, runs a house, collects donations, prepares sermons for missionary work, hosts several social and service clubs, feeds the hungry, and... there was something else. She'll think of it. Everything is handled." Bessie must believably be married to Albert. Her story includes the emotional impact of losing a child. The actor should be comfortable engaging with this emotional context in a supportive rehearsal environment.
● ALBERT M. JOHNSON (Male 28-55) "Dreams of a life of escaping into Don Quixote. His wife and his crippled leg keep that from happening." Albert must believably be married to Bessie. Albert carries emotional trauma from a past train crash, which shapes how he experiences the world. This role will require an actor who is comfortable leaning into emotional moments with care and authenticity.
● JACK (Female of child bearing age). "Jack is a reluctant project. Seven months pregnant." Jack is rough around the edges, blending grit, humor, and vulnerability. A versatile actor who can navigate two sides of the character: grounded and authentic
in reality; in other moments comedic, exaggerated and playful for the dream sequences. Actress must be willing to wear a baby bump prop or pregnancy prosthetic for rehearsals and performances.
● SCOTTY (Male 28-60), "a big deal". Scotty is bold with a traditionally masculine presence. An actor who can bring strong, confident energy and a grounded physicality, embodying a larger-than-life, rugged charm. A versatile actor who can
navigate two sides of the character: grounded in reality; and more playful in the dream sequences.
