CASTING (Age ranges are flexible)
HARRY HAY: Late Thirties. He is eccentric and passionate.
RUDI GERNREICH: Late Twenties-30s. He is creative, intelligent, and loves Harry. Austrian accent is a plus but not required.
MAN #1: 20's - 50's. Plays Chuck Rowland (Mattachine member), Vincente, Woman #2, and others. Plays the ukele.
MAN #2: 20s-50s. Plays Bob Hull (Mattahcine member), George Shibley, Woman #1, and others. Plays the clarinet (or recorder).
MAN #3: 20s-50s. Plays Dale Jennings (Mattachine member), Nigel Butler, Woman #3, and others.
SYNOPSIS
“Temperamental” was code for “homosexual” in the early 1950s, part of a created language of secret words that gay men used to communicate. THE TEMPERAMENTALS tells the story of two men—the communist Harry Hay and the Viennese refugee and designer Rudi Gernreich—as they fall in love while building the first gay rights organization in the pre-Stonewall United States.
