Plot
Four self-absorbed Broadway stars are in desperate need of a publicity boost, so when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town Indiana prom—and the press is involved—they know that it’s time to shine a spotlight on the issue … and themselves. In Edgewater, Indiana, Emma, a smart and brave young woman, wants to bring her girlfriend Alyssa to the prom, but the town’s parents are upset and want to keep the dance on the straight and narrow. On a mission, Broadway’s brassiest (Dee Dee, Barry, Angie, and Trent) join forces with the courageous girl to discover love and acceptance. Winner of the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical, The Prom resonates with audiences now more than ever.

Character Breakdown (all roles are open)
EMMA NOLAN: Any ethnicity, female presenting. High school senior, forced into the spotlight because she asked her girlfriend to the prom. A reluctant poster child for queer youth. Very smart, wears her heart on her sleeve. Shares a passionate kiss with Alyssa. Strong singer and actor. Should have a scrappy, underdog energy and a charming sense of awkward/anxious humor. Ability to play guitar a plus but not a requirement. Mezzo-soprano/alto.
BARRY GLICKMAN: Any ethnicity, male presenting. A proudly queer Broadway star. Completely politically incorrect and doesn’t know it. Impulsive and loves to make a scene everywhere he goes. Loveable and passionate. Adores Emma. Strong personality and strong singer/belter. Baritone.
DEE DEE ALLEN: Any ethnicity, female presenting. A Broadway diva with a huge ego to match her huge talent. No filter. Hilariously self-involved, but yearns to do something good for someone other than herself. Has seen it all and is not afraid to tell it like it is. Shares a passionate kiss with Mr. Hawkins. Strong personality and strong singer/belter. Alto.
TRENT OLIVER: Any ethnicity, male presenting. A pretentious and handsome Broadway star (and Juilliard graduate!) who is probably better known for his TV infomercials. Loves the sound of his own voice. Strong singer and actor. Baritone/tenor.
ANGIE DICKINSON: Any ethnicity, female presenting. A forever ensemble member in the Broadway production of Chicago. Has “crazy antelope legs”. Fosse chorus girl with a heart of gold. Strong Singer/dancer. Alto.
ALYSSA GREEN: Any ethnicity, female presenting. High school senior, a top student, and under enormous pressure to succeed. Emma’s secret girlfriend. Shares a passionate kiss with Emma. Strong singer/actor. Mezzo-soprano.
MR. HAWKINS: Any ethnicity, male presenting. The high school principal. Works hard at his job which is slowly killing him. Huge supporter of Emma. Frustrated by the parents who think they know everything. A secret Broadway fan. Shares a passionate kiss with Dee Dee. Baritone/bass.
MRS. GREENE: Any ethnicity, female presenting. Alyssa’s conservative, single mother. School board president. Very strong, controlling and intimidating. Probably senses that Alyssa is queer but is in denial about hit. Has very specific views of what is right and wrong. Strong singer. Alto.
SHELDON/SHELLY SAPERSTEIN: Any ethnicity, male, female, or non-binary. A New York press agent who has seen it all. Loves the gossip, and is not happy to be in Indiana.
SHELBY and KAYLEE: Any ethnicity, female presenting. The mean girls. Popular, concerned with what people think of them. Initially critical of Emma. Dancing skills a plus.
NICK and KEVIN: Any ethnicity, male presenting. The jocks, the popular kids, not above bullying Emma. Dancing skills a plus.
ENSEMBLE: All ethnicities, male and female, and non-binary to play high school students, Olivia Keating, Motel Clerk, partygoers, LGBTQ+ students, PTA members, members of the the non-Equity cast of Godspell, reporters, etc. Dancing skills a plus.
