Director Kamara Drane will be holding auditions for Ixion's season opening play "A Song for Coretta" by Pearl Cleage. Performance dates are October 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 & 19. Rehearsals will begin shortly after casting.Auditions will be cold reads from scripts.
The following roles are available:
Helen Richards - Black woman (50s-60s), a proud, put-together woman who is uncomfortable with the changing times, and whose strict ideas about respectability are challenged by the younger generations. (Think Claire Huxtable/ Diahann Carroll in bearing)
Mona Lisa Martin - Black woman, (40s-50s), an artist and survivor of Hurricane Katrina, trying to use her art to reconnect with others and herself after tragedy. A bit scruffy, definitely scrappy, reminiscent of a bag lady. Nola accent delightful, but by no means required.
Zora Evans - Black woman, (early-mid 20s), a highly educated and hungry young journalism student who is desperate to tell the stories that matter, even if others don't think they do. Almost annoying in her urgency, but not quite.
Keisha Cameron - Black girl, (17) a round-the-way girl who objects to being looked down upon by others and treated like a product of her environment. Straightforward and brash, unschooled but with her own brand of wisdom.
Gwen Johnson - (mid-20s-early 30s) a soldier home on leave, having a crisis of morality. Uses the discipline she's learned to cover up her trauma.
