Character Breakdown:
The age and gender identity of the characters listed below are provided as a guideline and do not necessarily need to match the age or gender identity of the actor. We encourage actors of all backgrounds to consider these roles and bring their unique perspectives to the characters.
Marvin: (Male identifying / High Baritone) 30's – 45. Childish, neurotic, intellectual, self-absorbed, overly competitive...but also annoyingly charming. A devoted father, he struggles to reconcile his desire for a happy traditional family with his love for Whizzer.
Whizzer: (Male identifying / Tenor) 30-40. Marvin’s lover. Handsome, athletic, and confident. Has a tempestuous relationship with Marvin. Though he claims that he's only in the relationship for money and sex, it’s a defense to avoid facing his true feelings for Marvin. Has a caring, warm relationship with Jason.
Trina: (Female identifying / Soprano / Belt) 30's - 45. Ex-wife to Marvin, Mother to Jason. Charmingly neurotic in her effort to understand the conflicting feelings she has in the aftermath of her divorce. Very devoted to her son and his well-being. She consults
Mendel, her husband’s psychiatrist and eventually marries him.
Jason: (Male identifying / Tenor) 11-13 years old (to play 13). Marvin and Trina’s son. Smart, introspective, and awkward. Jason’s impending Bar Mitzvah, his parents’ divorce, and the entrance of
Whizzer into his life leave him confused, angry and trying to sort it all out.
Mendel: (Male identifying / High Baritone) mid-30’s – 50. Marvin’s psychiatrist who marries Trina and enters into the tumultuous world of her life with her son, her ex and her ex’s lover while struggling with his own feelings.
Dr. Charlotte: (Female identifying / Alto / Mezzo) 30's – 50. One of the “lesbians from next door”. Charlotte is a dedicated doctor alarmed by the mysterious illness that is killing her gay male patients. Tough, but extremely nurturing and very much in love with her partner, Cordelia.
Cordelia: (Female identifying / Soprano / High Belt voice) Late 20’s – 40. The other “lesbian from next door.” Cordelia is Dr. Charlotte’s partner. She runs her own kosher catering business, is very keen on making a nice home, but also wants to be useful and valued for her contribution to the world.
