Synopsis:
Don’t Dress for Dinner centers around Bernard and Jacqueline, a not-so-happily married couple, both of whom are having extramarital affairs. As Jacqueline prepares to go out of town to visit her mother, Bernard invites his mistress and Robert, his best friend (and also Jacqueline’s lover, unbeknownst to Bernard), over for the weekend. He’s even hired a Cordon Bleu chef to cater the evening. Jacqueline discovers Robert is coming to town and cancels her trip, causing Bernard to panic. When Robert arrives, Bernard asks him to pretend Suzanne is Robert’s mistress. Robert mistakes the chef (Suzette), for Bernard’s mistress (Suzanne), producing a highly complicated dinner of hilarious hijinks, secret trysts and slapstick comedy.
Characters:
Jaqueline – wife of Bernard, mistress of Robert – strong, sassy, loves her husband but doesn’t mind having a lover on the side
Bernard – husband of Jaqueline – businessman, handsome, self-assured, wandering eye, loves his wife but happy to have a lover on the side.
Robert – charismatic but slightly reserved, best friend to Bernard and lover to Jaqueline.
Suzette – the cook – friendly, working class, funny, a swan beneath the duckling exterior.
Suzanne – Bernard’s mistress – fashion model, stylish, easily flustered.
George – Suzette’s husband – big, strong, protective of his wife, not one to indulge in fooling around.
Suggested accents:
English – Jaqueline, Bernard, Robert
French – George, Suzette
Accent not critical – Suzanne
Suggested Ages:
35 & up for Jaqueline, Bernard, Robert, and George
30 & up – Suzette and Suzanne
Note: Ages are suggested, not a requirement, don't let the age discourage you from auditioning
A Note From the Director:
I am honored and thrilled that my directorial debut will be at the Corn Stock Winter Theatre. “Don’t Dress for Dinner” is a hilarious comedy farce, fast-paced, quick-witted, and will have the audience laughing from start to finish. Six characters invited to dinner move from one confusing situation to the next.
