Charming but troubled Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, a quiet girl who works in the mill, fall in love, marry and have a stormy relationship that leads to tragedy and an attempt at mending old wounds from beyond the grave. Songs include "June is Busting Out All Over," "If I Loved You," and the beautiful "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Billy Bigelow: late 20’s to 30’s – The charismatic barker for Mullin's Carousel at a coastal carnival, Billy is strong and attractive, but proud, troubled, hard-headed and torn between right and wrong. Despite his inability to express his feelings, he truly loves Julie and tries to do the right thing.. Must be a strong singer and strong actor. Baritone.
Julie Jordan: 18 - 20. Julie is quiet and thoughtful, but still waters run deep. Sees something in Billy that no one else seems to see and stands by him no matter what. Julie has an inner strength and maturity in the second act as the mother of fifteen year old Louise. Must be a strong singer and strong actor. Soprano.
Carrie Pipperidge: 18 - 20. Lively and funny, but more than a little bit naΓ―ve, Carrie is Julie’s friend and co-worker. In love with Enoch Snow, Carrie offers a light-hearted balance to Julie's seriousness. Matures into a somewhat disillusioned mother of 9 in the second act. Must be a strong singer and strong actor. Mezzo.
Mrs. Mullin: Over 30. Proprietress of Mullin's Carousel, which was left to her by her late husband. She loves Billy in her way and is very jealous of any girl he pays attention to. NON-SINGING ROLE
David Bascombe: A dignified man of earned wealth, Mr. Bascombe is the owner of the Bascombe Cotton Mill factory, where both Julie and Carrie work. Also doubles in the ensemble.
Nettie Fowler: Over 30. Julie’s cousin. Soft-hearted, hearty coastal woman who owns and runs a seaside business. Nettie supports and comforts Julie throughout the show. Must be a strong singer and actor. Mezzo soprano.
Enoch Snow: late 20’s to early 30’s. A warm-hearted, adorably shy fisherman who loves Carrie and has big plans for the future. A successful and somewhat pompous business owner in the second act. Must be a strong singer and strong actor. Tenor.
Jigger Craigin: mid to late 30’s. Unscupulous sailor friend of Billy's who ultimately leads Billy astray. A con man with a bit of humor and an eye for Carrie Pipperidge. Must be a good singer and a strong actor.
Heavenly Friend: Billy’s escort to the afterlife. Will double in the ensemble.
Starkeeper/Dr. Seldon: In the afterlife, the Starkeeper is the gentle and matter-of-fact manager of the β€œbackyard of Heaven”. As Dr. Seldon, he is a gentle and respected country doctor, very reminiscent of the Starkeeper himself. NON-SINGING ROLE
Louise: Billy and Julie’s inquisitive 15-year-old daughter, on the verge of becoming a woman, but troubled and insecure. Central character in the β€œCarousel Ballet.” Will double in ensemble in Act 1. STRONG DANCER.
Enoch Snow, Jr.: Enoch and Carrie’s son, a pompous and self-important young man who is attracted to Louise even though he feels she is beneath his station in life. Will double in the ensemble in Act 1.
Additional Snow Children: 6 - 8 children, ages 6 - 14. Dancing ability a plus. May double as ensemble in Act 1.
Lead dancer in the ballet: Carnival barker, perhaps reminiscent of Billy himself. Ballet and lift experience required. May double in ensemble in Act 1.
Ensemble: All types and vocal ranges β€” townspeople, including: the girls from the mill, seafaring men, policemen, ship captain, principal, carnies and ballet horses; lots of singing and dancing.
