THE PLAY
A riotous parody of 1930s adventure stories and stiff-upper-lip heroics, Bullshot Crummond is a fast-paced, gloriously silly send-up of British pulp fiction. Expect moustaches, maniacal villains, damsels in distress, and a lot of quick changes — all delivered with a wink and a perfectly polished accent.
Think Indiana Jones meets The 39 Steps Meets Blackadder, but with even less sense and a lot more fun.
CAST in Order of Appearance (suggested ages are playing ages)
HUGH “BULLSHOT” CRUMMOND
Male, 30s–50s
Ex-officer of His Majesty’s Royal Loamshires. Dashing, heroic and utterly brainless. Requires excellent comic timing and confidence with physical comedy.
ALGY LONGWORT
Any Gender, 20s -30s
Upper Class Twit. Bullshot’s loyal old chum. Cheerful, a touch dim, always game for an adventure. Great chemistry with Bullshot essential. There is a fight scene with Bullshot. Could be a female presenting actor for added humour.
OTTO VON BRUNNO/SALVATORE SCALICIO
Male, 30s–60s
“The second most dangerous man in Europe.” A gloriously over-the-top German villain with an exaggerated German accent, bald head, twirling moustache and villainous flair.
Also plays SALVATORE SCALICIO an Italian/American Mafia gangster merely as a chance for a funny quick change routine
LENYA VON BRUNNO
Female, 20s–60s
Otto’s evil mistress. Glamorous, intelligent, and wickedly funny. German accent needed
Described in the script as “bondage-clad,” but our production will present her as elegant, commanding, and knowingly over-the-top.
The actor will have full choice over what they feel comfortable wearing — costume decisions will be collaborative and respectful.
PROFESSOR RUPERT FENTON/ PROFESSOR RACHEL FENTON
Any Gender, 40s–70s
An absent-minded scientist and member of the League of Scientific Discoveries. A gentle, bumbling character role.
MISS ROSEMARY FENTON
Female, 18–39
The Professor’s daughter, a sweet, lisping heroine with a slight rhotacism from Tunbridge Wells. Romantic and naïve, but with moments of surprising bravery. Please note: There is a brief scene in which Rosemary appears in period-style lingerie. This will be staged tastefully, with the actor’s comfort and consent as the priority. Costume and staging will be discussed openly during rehearsals.
INSPECTOR SCABBARD (of Scotland Yard)
Any Gender, 30s–60s
A faithful police officer. Serious, steady and utterly baffled by the chaos around them.
WOLFGANG SCHMIDT
Male, 20s–60s
Master of disguise and embittered Prussian. Plenty of comic potential for quick changes and exaggerated accents.
MAROVITCH
Any Gender, 20s–60s
Half-witted henchperson to the Von Brunnos. Physical comedy and strong ensemble skills required.
A COUNTRY POLICE OFFICER
Any gender, 20s–60s
Straightforward and sincere — the comic contrast to Bullshot’s madness.
A WAITER/WAITRESS (at the Carlton Tea Room)
Any gender, 20s–60s
Long-suffering, polite and perpetually exasperated. A lovely cameo role.
This show will suit performers who enjoy fast-paced farce, physical comedy, and ensemble playing. Expect lots of fight scenes, physical work, split-second timing, and hearty laughter in rehearsals.
