About the PlayThe Charles Dickens holiday classic comes to life as a live 1950's radio broadcast, complete with vintage commercials for fruitcake (extra-fancy), the magic of live sound effects, and musical underscoring. Written as a “play within a play,” the audience steps into a radio studio on Christmas Eve, where our actors are portraying radio performers who, in turn, bring Dickens’ story to life for a listening audience. A handful of performers cover dozens of voices and characters as Scrooge is led by three ghosts on a thrilling journey to discover the true meaning of Christmas. This charming, playful take on a family favorite will leave no one saying “Bah Humbug!”
A Note from the Director
What excites me most about this play is the in-studio experience it creates for the audience. They aren’t just hearing a radio version of A Christmas Carol. They get to watch a “live radio broadcast” unfold in front of them. From the actors stepping up to the microphone to deliver Dickens’ characters, to the moments when they step away and we see who these radio performers are in between, there’s a wonderful layer of humor, charm, and surprise. The play blends the timeless story of Scrooge’s redemption with the theatrical fun of watching a 1950's radio broadcast come to life before your eyes.
– Tim Scott
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
