Adapted for the stage by Barbara Field
Minneapolis playwright Barbara Fieldβs adaptations of A" Christmas Carol" are part of Spokane Civic Theatreβs DNA. Civic first produced her rich and delightful take on Mr. Dickensβ tale in the late 1970s, under the artful direction of the legendary Dorothy Darby Smith, one of our Founders.

SCROOGE
Male, 45 β 65
A man who lost his father to creditors as a kid and has grown up heeding his fatherβs advice to save his money. Until he realizes how terrible heβs become, he is a grumpy, unsympathetic human being who has no time for anyone or anything.
JACOB MARLEY
Male, 45 β 65
Scroogeβs former business partner who, before his death, was exactly like Scrooge. Comes back as a ghost in chains to warn Scrooge of how his life decisions will bind him in the afterlife.
GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST
Male, 8 β 12
An ever genuine, sprightly ghost who comes back with the history book of Scroogeβs past to show him the events that led to his current state.
GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT
Female, 45 β 70
A jovial, larger-than-life ghost who comes back to show Scrooge all the joy, love, and celebration he his missing out on while those around him celebrate Christmas.
BOB CRATCHIT
Male, 30 β 45
Gentle, loving father and husband. Scroogeβs overworked underpaid clerk. A hard working clerk in Scroogeβs employment. Dedicated to his family, especially his young son Tiny Tim. Cratchit maintains a kind heart, even in the face of Scroogeβs mean-spiritedness.
TINY TIM
Male, 8 β 12
Mr. and Mrs. Cratchitβs youngest son. He is lame and sickly, but otherwise the very definition of a loving Christmas spirit. He is a constant reminder to all that as long as we have each other, there lies happiness.
MRS. CRATCHIT
Female, 30 β 45
Tiny Timβs mother and Mr. Cratchitβs wife. She is a loving mother who tries to provide the best for her children with what sheβs got.
MARTHA CRATCHIT
Female, 17
The eldest of the Cratchit childrenβresponsible and nurturing.
BELINDA CRATCHIT
Female, 12 β 15
The prankster of the Cratchit family with a sparky personality.
PETER CRATCHIT
Male, 12 β 15
A kind, curious kid.
EBENEZER
Male, 20 β 30
A man who lost his father to creditors as a kid and is beginning to harden to his to save his money. He is still a sympathetic man, and in love with Belle.
BELLE CRAWFORD
Female, 20 β 30
Scroogeβs fiancΓ© from when they were young. She is beautiful and not impressed by money.
YOUNG EBENEZER
Male, 10 β 12
A boy who loves to read. Naive to the ways of the world.
FAN
Female, 10 β 12
Scroogeβs sister and Fredβs mother. A vision in the past, and symbol of the loving kindness of Christmas time.
MR. FEZZIWIG
Male, 50 β 70
A portly, jolly man who used to throw a huge Christmas party every year for the community. He was Scroogeβs first boss and after teaching him all he knew, the antithesis of the man Scrooge became.
MRS. FEZZIWIG
Female, 50 β 70
The consummate hostess and Mr. Fezziwigβs wife, she loved to help throw the Christmas party every year. She is prideful.
FRED
Male, 28 β 38
Warm and compassionate, Scroogeβs nephew, feels sorry for the old man, yet still obligated to him, being family. He is full of Christmas cheer, energetic.
MRS. FRED
Female, 28 β 38
Tired of the thought of inviting βUncle Scroogeβ over for Christmas dinner each year.
DICK WILKINS
Male, 20 β 30
Young Scroogeβs best friend. Energetic.
YOUNG MARLEY
Male, 20 β 30
Starts business with Scrooge at 18 and shares a similar mindset of greed.
