Murray City Cultural Arts is announcing general auditions for Something Rotten! Directed by Candy Tippetts, Music Direction by Keri Hughes, Choreography by Alan LaFleur, Costumes by Paige Wilson and Set Design by Dwight Western. Stage Manager is Chuck Sutter with intern assistant Janell Rogers.Auditioners should be at least 18 years old by June 13, 2025. This production is PG-13.
The roles of Nick Bottom and Thomas Nostradamus have been pre-cast.
Vocal video submissions are accepted through Saturday, February 16th until 9 pm. Auditioners should submit a one minute vocal audition in the style of the production in a YouTube format (no acapella singing) and sent to [email protected]. Please include Audition Form.
Callbacks with be by invitation only on February 22nd. Dance auditions will be held from 9 am to noon with acting/vocal callbacks from 1pm to 5 pm.
This production will be performed at the Murray Park Amphitheater June 13, 14, 16, 19, 20 and 21, 2025.
Something Rotten! is a musical comedy with a book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick with music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Set in 1595, the story follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, who struggle to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the wild popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare.

Something Rotten! Character Breakdown
Minstrel- Male, mid 20s to 40s. Seeking charismatic actor with a thousand faces. The Minstrel will not only sing the opening number, but will also be in the ensemble. (Baritone)
Shylock – Male 30 - 65 ( an old Jewish moneylender). (Baritone.)
Lord Clapham – Male, a flamboyant theatre producer and a handful of other small parts including ensemble. (Baritone)
Nigel Bottom- Male, mid 20’s to 30’s. Nick’s younger brother. A sweetly naïve young writer and poet, perhaps a little awkward. He falls in love with Portia and ultimately finds confidence in himself through art and love. Seeking a great comedic actor who sings very well. (HIgh baritone/tenor).
William Shakespeare- Male, mid 20s to 40s. A renaissance rock star. Think Mick Jagger or James Brown. Seeking a comedic actor with a killer pop/rock voice, tap dance skills a plus. (rock tenor)
Bea- Female, mid 20s to 30s. Nick’s wife and “Right Hand Man”. She loves and supports him despite his questionable decision making and lack of success. Bea resorts to dressing up like a male to make ends meet and to prove to Nick she can be an actor. Seeking a comedic actress who sings very well. (Belter)
Portia- 20s to 30s female. An adorably quirky Puritan girl whom Nigel meets on the street. They fall madly in love with each other over their mutual love for Shakespeare and poetry. Seeking a great comedic actress who sings very well. (Youthful Soprano with a strong mix)
Brother Jeremiah- Male, 30- 50s. Portia’s father. A Puritan with deeply repressed homoerotic tendencies. He despises playwrights, poets and all things ungodly. Seeking a great comedic who sings.
Ensemble- Various ages/ethnicities. Seeking traditional dancers and quirky character types who are strong singers and dancers (must tap)
