SYNOPSIS
As A Christmas Carol with a modern twist, Humbug follows the story of Eleanor Scrooge, a ruthless and ambitious Wall Street executive who has an aversion to all things Christmas but a strong appetite for power. Locked in in her office on Christmas
Eve, she is visited by her deceased former boss, Marley, who portends her visitation by three “Advisors” who provide perspective of her past, present and future and eventually instill an appreciation for the spirit of the holiday. An upbeat and clever
adaptation of Dickens’ classic that is sure to appeal to audiences of all ages.
DIRECTORS NOTE
This will be a great ensemble show for all! A fun challenge for many playing multiple roles with widely varying characters. Those with single character roles will get a chance to truly evolve with their parts. The special effects planned for the journey through time and space will certainly keep our audience captivated.
Mostly, I look forward to having fun with this cast and crew!
Audition cuts will be available soon at Farmingtonplayers.org/auditions

CAST OF CHARACTERS
Eleanor Scrooge (251 speeches): 40’s, Female
She has developed a hard exterior over the years. She throws her weight around and expects obedience. Her discovered truth leads to her redemption.
Bobbie Cratchit (133 speeches): 30’s, Female
Scrooge’s assistant. A good soul, loyal employee and caring mother to Timmy. She clings to the idea of goodness in all people, even Eleanor.
Marley / Ben / Gravedigger (56 speeches): 40s-50s, Male
Marley knows the truth of living a selfish life and looks to help himself by trying to help Eleanor change her ways. Ben is an idealistic social worker.
Past / Juan / Caroler (45 speeches): 20s, Male
Past leads the trio of Advisors in showing Eleanor the truth. Written as an Asian character but not in stone. Juan is a care-free fun-seeker that sports an accent.
Present / Caroler (63 speeches): 30s-40s, Female
She is bit of an odd-duck and sports a rather thick cockney accent. A little rusty with her “powers”, she doesn’t let Eleanor get away with things.
Future / John / Robert (46 speeches): 30s, Male
The big, silent-type Advisor, he leads Eleanor with a point of his hand. John is desperate to keep the family company that Eleanor has “stolen.” Robert exudes charm and caring as the loving boyfriend from Eleanor’s past.
Phil (53 speeches): 20s, Male
Scrooge’s nephew, he always sees the best in people, even his aunt. Even when tested by his wife and friends, he keeps the faith.
Sarah / Nellie / Nurse (46 speeches): 20s, Female
Along with Ben, she is a tireless advocate for the homeless, even in the face of Elanor’s ire. Nellie is the clueless receptionist for the company in the future who assumes nothing for certain.
Tess / Carla (52 speeches): 20s, Female
Eleanor’s terminally-ill sister, she’s profoundly disappointed by Elie’s lack of priority to her wish for young Phil. Carla is the told-you-so wife to Phil, seeing Eleanor for the dispassionate person she it.
Ellie / Lisa / Caroler (35 speeches): 20s, Female
She is the young Eleanor of the past before the clutches of greed and selfishness took hold. Lisa, with husband Bill, are contemporary friends to Phil and Carla.
Bill / Tug / Benson / Caroler (35 speeches): 20s-30s, Male
Bill is husband to Lisa above. Tug is seen-it-all-before Christmas tree salesman. Benson has the enviable task of informing Scrooge of the future that she’s been evicted.
Young Phil / Timmy (40 speeches): Age 9, Boy
Plays both Eleanor’s nephew and Bobbie’s son. Great challenge for a youth actor!
