FREE EVENT- For more information, please visit [www.writersontherange.org] or contact publisher David Marston at [email protected] or call 970-844-3134.Auden Schendler, Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Aspen One, has spent 26 years addressing the climate crisis through activism, movement building, and project demonstration. Schendler has held various impactful roles, including town councilman, air quality commissioner, Outward Bound instructor, and ambulance medic. He has been recognized as a "Climate Saver" by the EPA and a "Climate Innovator" by Time magazine. His first book, "Getting Green Done: Hard Truths from the Front Lines of the Sustainability Revolution," was hailed by climatologist James Hansen as “an antidote to greenwash.”
In "Terrible Beauty," Schendler follows in the footsteps of environmental classics such as Walden, A Sand County Almanac, Silent Spring, and The Ecology of Commerce while adding his unique voice to the conversation. The book critiques the modern environmental movement for its reliance on superficial solutions, such as carbon offsets, and offers a new path forward through empathy, human connection, and grassroots action.
Rather than a typical climate manifesto, Terrible Beauty is a personal and often humorous exploration of family, love, and the work of climate action. With praise from Harvard professor Naomi Oreskes, who called it “weirdly fun,” and environmentalist Bill McKibben, who lauded Schendler’s expertise, the book offers a fresh, unconventional perspective on the climate crisis.
Books are available at Maria's Bookshop in downtown Durango and on the evening of the event.
