This event is designed to help train our volunteers as snorkel guides and safety kayakers for the upcoming events, along with additional training for experienced volunteers wanting to move up to assistant or senior guide. Whether you are new this season or you feel like you need some additional training all are welcome. Senior guides are appreciated to help with the in water training.Volunteers will need to complete some quick e-learning modules before attending (~30 min). Based at the North Shore Canoe Club - Lake Pupuke
When you register you will have the option to attend any part of the following.
10:00 am - 11:00 am - Welcome and introduction to EMR volunteering
11:00 am - 12:00 pm - Briefing training, H&S and equipment overview
12:00 pm - 12:30pm - Catered lunch and Q&A
12:30 pm - 4:00pm - In water snorkel guide training and safety kayak training (with ASK, TBC)
4:00 pm - Debrief
What you'll cover beforehand:
- EMR theory modules which covering our SOP, volunteer roles, how to give a briefing/karakia, etc.
We will cover the following during day:
- Theory session which covers our SOP, volunteer roles, etc.
- How to give a briefing/karakia
- How to kit up participants
- Leading a group
- Rescue scenarios
- Safety kayak rescues
You will be marked and given a score which will give you your starting role! Please note that we will give you feedback and help you further your skills throughout the season. What ever role you have initially is just a starting point!
