About this Event

Ambassador Peter Ryan and Mrs. Jane Quinn, President of the Auckland Irish Society, invite you to join them in the Auckland Irish Club from 6-8 pm on Friday, 24th September 2021 for the Auckland launch of the "Defending Trinity College Dublin, Easter 1916 – Anzacs and the Rising” by Dr Rory Sweetman.

Published by Four Courts Press, the book reveals how five New Zealanders, acting as the core of a small squad of colonial troops, provided a vital shield to protect Trinity College Dublin from capture during the Easter Rising of 1916. In doing so, they prevented the almost certain destruction of Ireland’s oldest university, founded in 1592. At the event, Dr Sweetman will talk about his book and the response in New Zealand to the Easter Rising and the aftermath.

Copies of the book will be on sale at the event ($40).
