Named after your ex-girlfriend heart, the Empty Quarter (Rub’ Al Khali) of Oman is known for its harsh desert climate filled with endless sand dunes as far as the eye can see.
The Empty Quarter, which encompasses most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and Yemen, has ancient remains only recently discovered by archaeologists in 1992 using remote sensing equipment.
The city of Ubar, once a trade port along the fabled frankincense route through ancient Arabia, dates to 2,800 BC. And based on excavations and satellite imagery it is also believed to be the Iram of the Pillars, mention in the Quran as a wicked and many-towered city eventually swallowed up by a massive sandstorm – a place sought out by adventurers and explorers for over a century!
And on this weekend, we will take a deep dive into this mysterious area, not far from Salalah, trekking the dry canyons, exploring lost Bedouin cities, and discovering ancient archaeological sites. And as the sun sets on the vast dunes of Arabia, we will get settle into our desert camp for Salalah-style delicacies, served by a campfire.
Lets go!
Day 1: OLD SALALAH
After arrival and immigration formalities, we will take a look at Old Souq and grab a dinner, before heading to hotel for check in. In the evening, at leisure, we will take a walk at the beach.
Day 2: LOST CITY OF UBAR
After breakfast we will start journey into the Empty Quarter, an area of vast sand dunes and lost cities. Here we will explore the ruins of Ubar and learn the many legends of this fabled city. We then drive through breathtaking dunes until we reach our campsite and watch the sunset before tucking into a BBQ dinner. Tonight, we stay in tents.
DAY 3: EMPTY QUARTER
After breakfast at camp, we head out to spend the day exploring the many dunes and grand views of the Empty Quarter. We will then continue to drive to Brakanh oasis situated between the sand dunes, which will also be a good time to climb up for a better view, before the noon sun hits. In the afternoon, after lunch we head towards another camp site to set up for the night, at spot among some of the highest sand dunes. Head to airport for return flight home.
