In celebration of Black Futures Month, join MOA for a special evening exploring Atlanthos, a fictional high-tech underwater realm created by eleven Ethọ́s Lab Griots—youth storytellers inspired by the West African tradition of oral history.Storytelling is a powerful tool that can help us understand and shape the world around us. Through narrative catharsis, we can see characters who look like us knock down barriers we feel restricted by, and empower us to break those down in our own lives. Imagination and belief are the starting point for marginalized people to build the kind of futures we want to see. Atlanthos, featured in the MOA display Atlanthos: Youth-Driven Innovation Through Afrofuturistic Storytelling, reimagines the future by blending innovation and narrative.
The evening includes a panel of experts discussing Ethọ́s Lab’s impact on transforming innovation through Afrofuturism, storytelling, and youth-led creativity. Experience artifacts from Atlanthos, including 3D-printed helmets, banners, and multimedia narratives.

This project was made possible with support from UBC’s Community University Engagement Support Fund. Ethọ́s Lab is an after-school innovation academy empowering youth in Grades 5 to 12 to explore S.T.E.A.M through culture-based experiences.
