Tackling the cost of living crisis through storytelling and connection.ATL Living Lab: Buford Highway
We’re back with our second ATL Living Lab! This Buford Highway installment will center on the Doraville, Chamblee, and Norcross communities as we tackle the cost of living crisis through storytelling and connection.
Join us at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the Gwinnett County Library’s beautiful Norcross Branch for interactive exhibits, expert panels, community-building activities, food, and fellowship made possible by Canopy Atlanta and Atlanta Civic Circle .
The topic for this session is tenant rights. According to a recent housing affordability study analyzing a 10-mile stretch of land north of I-85 and just south of Buford Highway, there is a major housing shortage for residents earning less than $17,500 a year. For every 100 people in that category, only four affordable apartments exist.
According to Cost of Living writer and Living Lab panelist Angie Tran-Uddullah, finding housing isn’t the only issue: Some of the area’s apartment complexes and informal rental units—which are often inhabited by vulnerable populations: low-income people, single parents, and immigrants—are in deplorable conditions. The ATL Living Labs event series is an extension of Cost of Living , a reporting project launched in 2023 that trains community journalists and produces in-depth enterprise reporting on the cost of living. This investigative reporting and community storytelling project sheds light on the challenges Atlantans face. Inspired by the reporting and community listening of hundreds of residents living along major Atlanta corridors—Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, Buford Highway, Memorial Drive, and Campbellton Road—the labs explore stories from each area and delve into exclusive insights from writers and subject matter experts.
