Born in Lafayette, LA on Halloween night of 1978, it didn’t take long for Atchafalaya established a tremendously loyal fan base. Playing covers of The Eagles, Dan Fogleberg, The Beatles, CSN&Y, along with some Cajun favorites and anything else they felt like playing, they would always slip in a few originals. Before long, the originals were as popular as the covers. This led to numerous high profile shows around the country and across the pond, playing in countries like Turkey, Morocco, Czechoslovakia, and Portugal. It also led to a sponsorship with Budweiser and the recording of two national radio jingles of "This Bud's For You ', as well as local, regional and national TV appearances.
After a long hiatus that started in the early 90s, the band was approached in 2007 to reunite for an annual benefit called "The Medicine Show" at one of their old stompin’ grounds, Grant Street Dancehall. The overwhelming emotions amongst the band members and tremendous response from the crowd that night led to talk of more shows. Sadly, longtime bass player, Cal Arnold, passed away in 2008. Still, this re-emergence brought back the close friendships that were somewhat cast aside during their time apart. In 2013 they reunited with their original bass player, Lance Lafargue and discovered that the “magic” was still there. The harmonies and meticulous pursuit of “getting things right” were still there. The band was as tight as ever and having the time of their lives.
In a very fitting turn of events they were invited to the first annual Boudin Festival in Scott, LA. Having been a mainstay at that festival when it was in Broussard, LA the band jumped at the chance. That same day, thanks in no small part to the efforts of longtime fan and friend, Eric White, they were honored by being inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. They’ve since released a compilation CD of their first two albums and a bonus track of their wildly popular parody of Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus", "Watch out Armadillous". They continue to be the best of friends, have been and plan on doing shows together for years to come.
So, jump in and hang on y’all!!!
The current members are David Varisco, Lance Lafargue, Charlie Rees, Larry Menard and Chris Foreman.
