Get ready for another Astronomy on Tap event on Thursday, February 6th (7-9 pm) at Hilo Town Tavern! Tohono O'odham storytelling is an oral tradition that weaves together the Himdag (way of life) for those who call the Sonoran Desert home. These stories, passed down through generations, are a living archive of wisdom, offering lessons about nature, humanity, and the interconnectedness of all life. Whether told around a fire or at communal gatherings, storytelling is a vital way of preserving identity, fostering community, and sharing cultures. Puragra Guhathakurta: Complex Life on Earth and Dark Matter in the Milky Way Galaxy
There is a beautiful connection between the development and existence of complex life here on Earth and the fact that we (our planet/planetary system and star) are embedded within a large dark matter rich galaxy. Chemistry would be an easy subject if we didn't live in a galaxy like the Milky Way, but we wouldn't be around to study it! I will also touch upon the lives and times of galaxies.
