Fascinated by the different galaxies and stars? Then come and learn more! This winter and spring the Kempsville Recreation Center is partnering with the Back Bay Amateur Astronomers Club to provide residents with a fun and interactive introductory series on the wonders above. Classes are two part - in class instructional, followed by a stroll outside to look up and see the night skies through telescopes provided. (Weather permitting).THE WINTER SKY!
We will show what constellations and celestial objects are visible in the winter sky. The "favorite", or best known winter constellation is Orion the Hunter, but there are many more, such as Taurus the Bull, Canis Major and Canis Minor, Orion's "hunting dogs", Gemini the Twins, Cassiopeia the Queen, and Auriga the Charioteer.
In December we will be able to see, (Weather permitting, of course) Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, the Great Orion Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the bright stars Betelgeuse, Aldebaran, and Capella.
- Outdoor observing through telescopes
- Various night sky targets will be viewed outside
- Reservations are required. Class fee $5 per person- center membership or day pass is required, or a qualifying insurance membership such as Silver Sneakers.
- PLEASE NOTE: PARTICIPANTS UNDER THE AGE OF 10 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.
