From the harmonious trine (120°) to the intense square (90°) and the powerful conjunction (0°), each aspect tells a story about how planetary energies blend or clash. Understanding aspects is essential for chart interpretation, helping you see the deeper layers beyond just zodiac placements.
Class 5 - Aspects - Outlining the Degrees
Aspects are crucial components of astrological chart interpretation, representing the relationships and interactions between celestial bodies within the birth chart. Understanding aspects is essential for gaining insight into an individual's personality, relationships, and life experiences. This class offers a comprehensive exploration of aspects in astrology, providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to interpret aspect patterns, degrees, and decans with greater depth.
Aspect Types
Students will learn about the different types of aspects, including major aspects (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) and minor aspects (quincunx, semisextile, quintile, etc.). Each will be studied in terms of their angular measurement, symbolism, and influence.
Degrees and Orbs
Exact Degree: Every aspect is defined by its degree. For example, a trine occurs at 120°, but the influence is strongest when it is exact (within a 1°–2° orb).
Orbs of Influence: Students will learn how wide an orb can be applied for each aspect type (e.g., conjunctions allow wider orbs than sextiles).
Critical Degrees: Certain degrees within signs (such as 0°, 15°, and 29°) hold amplified energy. Students will learn how to recognize and interpret them in aspects.
Decans and Their Role in Aspects
Each zodiac sign is divided into three decans (10° segments), with each decan influenced by a sub-ruler planet. This adds layers of detail to how an aspect expresses itself:
1st Decan (0°–9°): Pure essence of the sign, ruled by the sign’s planetary ruler.
2nd Decan (10°–19°): Adds the influence of another sign of the same element.
3rd Decan (20°–29°): Introduces a final planetary influence that flavors the sign differently.
When planets form aspects across decans, students will see how the flavor of the decan modifies the aspect’s energy. For example, a square between a planet in Aries’ 1st decan (ruled by Mars) and a planet in Cancer’s 3rd decan (co-ruled by Jupiter) will express very differently than if both planets were in their middle decans.
Interpretation Skills
Through practical exercises and case studies, students will learn to:
Interpret aspects in terms of degree exactness and strength.
Recognize how decan sub-rulership changes the tone of an aspect.
Weave together aspects, orbs, and decans to provide more nuanced chart readings.
Aspect Patterns
This class will also explore common aspect formations such as stelliums, T-squares, grand trines, and grand crosses, and how degrees and decans within those patterns add complexity.
Practical Application
By the end of this class, students will not only know what aspects are, but also how to apply degrees and decans to refine their interpretations. This will allow them to:
Identify subtler layers of personality expression.
Recognize timing triggers in transits when exact degrees activate natal aspects.
Provide clients with deeper, more precise insights during readings.
