AHP 20 Years Serving the Haitian Community
On Oct. 24, 2003, hundreds of Haitian and Haitian-American professionals gathered at the to discuss the need for an association to address the concerns of their community. Borne out of that evening’s discussion was the Association of Haitian Professionals (AHP). Subsequently, on April 16, 2004, AHP was formally incorporated in Washington, DC, and officially opened for business.
To date, AHP has hosted and executed many events, activities, programs, and projects to enlighten and entertain its member body and fulfill its expressed desires. Open general body meetings, toy drives, panel discussions, professional development programs, community service projects, and socials are just a few of the events and activities sponsored by AHP, with many more to come. Activities such as these motivate prospective AHP members to continue working diligently toward building the Association.
Live Performance by Tabou Combo
“Rhythm is the essence of Tabou Combo," said Tabou Combo’s co-founder and ex-drummer Herman Nau. Founded in 1968, the infectious rhythm of Haiti’s national dance music, Konpa (con-pah), propelled the country’s preeminent dance band worldwide. Their indigenous rhythms rocked audiences from Japan to Panama, Paris to Miami for more than five decades.
They are the original ambassadors of Haitian music, having played almost every major world festival, taking Konpa music where Celia Cruz took Salsa. Tabou Combo’s relentless and high-energy style of Konpa dance beat knows no language barrier. Singing in English, Spanish, French, or their native Creole, Tabou serves a hot mix of grooves and textures with roots from around the world. Their musical repertoire is a mixture of Haiti’s vodou ceremonial rara drums, Haiti's French colonial kontradans and quadrilles, African Soukous, Dominican Republic Meringue, and Funk from the American Soul Era while commanding a dominant presence of Konpa.
