𝗙𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮’𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗹𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆!
On Saturday, September 20, 2025, Fruita residents and visitors are invited to take part in the City’s first Asphalt Art Paint Day at the intersection of Peach and Aspen Streets. We’re asking the community to come out and help us transform this space into a mural of aspen leaves drifting across water.
When selecting the design, the City reached out in person, directly, to residents and businesses in the surrounding neighborhood. Their feedback guided the process to ensure the artwork would reflect the character of the area and be something the community is proud to see every day. The design was also chosen for its simplicity and bright colors, making it both welcoming for people and highly visible to drivers.
This project is part of Fruita’s new Asphalt Art Program, which brings art directly to our streets to improve traffic safety, create a sense of place, and strengthen community identity. Across the country, asphalt art has been shown to:
•Reduce vehicle speeds by up to 45%
•Shorten and improve pedestrian crossings
•Encourage people to linger longer in painted areas, supporting nearby businesses and creating vibrant public spaces
•Turn intersections into landmarks — not only for traffic, but also as places where people gather, connect, and welcome visitors
Traditional traffic-calming measures such as curb extensions, medians, or engineered redesigns can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Asphalt art offers a low-cost, high-impact solution, transforming asphalt into public space through color, creativity, and community involvement.
The Paint Day will take place alongside the Fruita Farmers & Makers Market, creating a block-party atmosphere with painting, music, and concessions. All ages are welcome, and all painting supplies will be provided. There is no sign-up required and no time obligation — just stop by if you’d like, pick up a brush, and help us leave a lasting mark on the intersection together.
