Conference and field meetingAspects of the history and progress of the geology of Ireland15-18 August 2023.
Low conference registration fee (€17).
The conference and field meeting aims to explore aspects of the history and progress of geology in Ireland from the 18th century through to the mid-20th century, including aspects that impacted beyond the shores of Ireland as well as those that advanced the understanding of geology within Ireland.
It is anticipated that the conference presentations will encompass aspects that helped advance understanding of: mapping, stratigraphy, physical geology, igneous and metamorphic geology, glacial geology, seismology, palaeontology, economic geology, public understanding of geology.
The field meetings will explore sites, archives and exhibits that reflect aspects of the progress and development of geology in Ireland and beyond.
It is intended to display a number of rare maps and artefacts relating to the history of Irish geology at the meeting.

Programme (provisional)
Day 1: (All day) Conference presentations at Trinity College Dublin and tour of TCD Museum building (see image above).
Day 2: (AM) Tour of Geological Museum, TCD; visit to Richard Griffith's Dublin residence(am); (PM) Memorialising Irish geologists - visit to tombs and burial places in a Dublin cemetery.
Day 3: (AM) Killiney Beach - Robert Mallet and the beginning of scientific seismology + the Ailsa Craig connection; (PM)Geological Survey of Ireland
Day 4: (AM) National Museum of Ireland visit (& optional extension viewing 'Down to Earth - Exploring Ireland's Geology' exhibition).

Please ensure you have registered your attendance (via this page) and/or sent your presentation proposal by the deadline date.
We suggest you book accommodation and make travel arrangements for your visit to Dublin as soon as possible, as the summer can often be a busy time for visitors to Dublin. See suggestions in 'Arrangements' section below.
N.B. there is conference fee of €17 (not charged here) - payable by cash on arrival to the conference.
We will contact all registered by email shortly before the conference for final confirmation and updates.
Conference presentations
The meeting is open to all and it is not necessary to present a paper in order to register and attend this meeting.
However, we welcome proposals of presentations to the conference day (Tuesday 15th August) on one or more aspects relating to the history and progress of the geology of Ireland.
Speakers are provisionally allocated between 15 and 20 minutes for presentations. The final time available for each presentation will be subject to the total number of papers offered.

➢ Name and affiliation of presenter/author
➢ Abstract (250 words maximum)
Deadline for presentation proposals is June 1st 2023.

If papers are of sufficient interest, we hope to be able to offer opportunity to publish in a collective volume/issue through one of the HOGG conference publication channels i.e. Earth Sciences History journal or a Special Publication of the Geological Society of London.

Arrangements
Conference fee = €17 (£15.00) - payable by cash on arrival.

The fee covers lunch and coffees at the Tuesday conference only.


Participants will need to make their own arrangements for accommodation, eating and travel/transportation costs whilst staying in Dublin - see suggestions below.
Travel :
Participants will need to arrange their own transport to field and visit sites.
A 7-day travel pass (Leap Card) @ €32 gives unlimited travel on Dublin City Bus services (operated by Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland), Luas, DART and Commuter Rail. Purchase online at https://about.leapcard.ie/leap-visitor-card or at Dublin Airport in Arrivals Terminals 1 or 2 . The Leap Card will cover travel for all meeting excursions.
Local travel arrangements to sites visited on the excursion days will be provided to participants on registration.
Accommodation:
Participants will need to make their own accommodation arrangements.
Hotels: Generally €100-200+ per night for a twin room (see www.booking.com, or www.trivago.ie, or similar booking sites for the range of prices and room configuration).
Airbnb: various accommodation types available, price depends on capacity (https://www.airbnb.co.uk/dublin-city-ireland/stays).
Hostel: €16-25+ per night. (https://www.hostelworld.com for bookings).
Eating: Evening meals: generally €20-40 pp. - there is a great and wide range of restaurants close to Trinity to suit all tastes and pockets.
We hope to make an optional, informal arrangement for participants to meet and enjoy an evening meal together at a local restaurant on at least one evening during the meeting - details and confirmation will be available at the meeting.
Travel to Dublin :
Air travel: Dublin is well served by direct flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Bournemouth, Exeter, Glasgow (see Ryanair, Aer Lingus + others), many with very affordable fares.
Travel from Airport to Dublin city centre (https://www.dublinairport.com/to-from-the-airport/by-bus/dublin-buses). Public transport: by Bus - use Leap Card (see Travel above), also available via Dublin Express (€8); AirCoach (€9-14 return depending on destination in the city); Taxi (€25-30 each way).
Ferries: Dublin is served by direct ferries from Liverpool (P&O), Holyhead (StenaLine), or via Fishguard to Rosslare (StenaLine).
