Think of this class as a way to prepare for the full Primary Series. We will take the postures from the Primary series and modify them to suit our current levels.
This class is for you if:
- You have been practicing yoga asana for sometime and want to explore the Ashtanga practice
- Want to practice Ashtanga but hard/lazy to practice by yourself
- You are looking for a supportive community
- Realized the sequence is hard but never practiced with modifications
- You are an Ashtanga lover ?
- You are a yoga teacher and looking to deepen your practice
This class will follow the core principles of Ashtanga
1. Ujjayi Breathing will be used - if you are not familiar with Ujjayi Breathing please watch this video first
Listening to the sound of your own breathing is an integral part of Ashtanga practice - it draws your attention inwards and takes it away from external sounds and can be considered a pratyahara technique. “Yoga is the stilling of the Fluctuations of the mind” - says Patanjali in the yoga sutras. Sometimes in the posture the breathing becomes strained, short, aggressive, labored, shallow or fast - listening to the sound of the breath at all times helps to still the mind.
2. Use of Bandhas - Mula Bandha (Root Lock) and Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock) will be explained in the context of Ashtanga Yoga and practitioners will be given cues and encouraged to use the bandhas to the best of their abilities.
3. Drishti - focus of the eyes at various focal points in each Asana will be observed. This helps in increasing the practice of concentration. Finding proper alignment in the pose, listening to the sound of breathing, gazing at the focal point and applying bandhas - to perform all these the mind needs to be fully concentrated.
4. Vinyasa - One of the issues in modern yoga is over emphasis on physical postures and preoccupation with the body. The Ashtanga uses the Vinyasa system where postures are not held for a long time and there is equal emphasis on movement and breath in the hope that the practitioner will realize that postures, like all forms, are impermanent. The quest of yoga is for the formless. Vinyasa yoga can be thought of as a meditation on the impermanence of form (the constant movement from one posture to the other) that can lead to the realization of permanence in the formless. For practical purposes we will use the half vinyasa count in the class.
5. Postures & Sequencing - We will begin with 5 rounds of Sun Salutation A, 3 rounds of Sun Salutation B, complete standing sequence, selected postures from the sitting sequence and complete finishing sequence (depending on time)
6. Opening & Closing Mantra - in the tradition of Ashtanga Yoga the practice will commence and end with mantras.
7. If time permits - at the end of each class we will dive into a couple of asanas and explore their alignment, modifications, application of bandhas and drishti in detail.
This class is NOT for complete beginners to yoga. Prerequisite to join class - able to do Sun Salutation A + B five rounds each
