Ash King is a blues and roots artist from Healesville in Victoria. A journeyman with a memorable baritone voice and funky acoustic guitar style, Ash has spent the past 18 months recording his debut solo album. Featuring stripped-back earthy arrangements and influenced by John Butler, Xavier Rudd and The Pierce Brothers, the result is a record called Yarra Valley Mud. “The Yarra Valley is my home, and it’s good for wine, and great for musical inspiration. Mud is easy to get stuck in, but eventually, it grows new shoots – it took me around six years to write and record the album. Mud was once was wood, like a guitar. Finally, the name is a tribute to one of the greats, Muddy Waters, who released a psychedelic blues LP called Electric Mud.”
Recorded at studios around Melbourne by Finn Keane, the record features Ash’s brother Ben on bass and long-lost cousin Danny Boldison on drums. Special guests include his wife Ash (yeah, same name), sister-in-law Jess, old man Andrew, and good friends Jason Semple and Wurundjeri elder, Murrundindi on yidaki.
As a singer-songwriter and frontman of blues-rock band Smoke Stack Rhino, Ash has taken his high-energy show around Australia, often having too much fun dancing across the stage that he forgets to sing the next verse. He’s now set to add another feather to his bow with the release of the album.
Ash is an original storyteller, electric performer and is a fresh voice in Australian blues and roots.
