This free Certificated 2-hour asbestos awareness course, is a legal requirement for all trades-related workers.
About this Event

Limited to just 12 attendees, this 2-hour Certificated course is sponsored by Safety is the Key Ltd and Deskteam so provided free of charge.

Q. Why must construction-related workers undertake asbestos awareness training?

A. The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations say so! Around 5,000 workers die in the UK every year and this training is designed to help reduce that number.

“Every employer must make sure that anyone who is liable to disturb asbestos during their normal work, or who supervises those employees, gets the correct level of information, instruction and training so that they can work safely and competently without risk to themselves or others”.

Q. How often must training be done?

A. Every 12 months. We all forget training in time so refresher training is vital.

But, this does not have to be a formal Certificated course. You can attend a briefing or read a ToolBox Talk.

Q. Can I work on or remove asbestos after attending this training course?

A. No! This asbestos awareness course gives you the information needed to avoid work that may disturb asbestos during work. It won’t allow you to carry out work with asbestos.

If you are planning to carry out work that will disturb asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), you need the next level of training either: Non-licensable work with asbestos including NNLW or Licensable work with asbestos.

Q. Must Self-employed workers train themselves in asbestos awareness?

A. Yes! The law is very clear. The self-employed in construction trades must have annual training as well.

Q. But I never disturb asbestos in my trade – must I still get trained up?

A. Yes! If your work may disturb asbestos, you must have annual asbestos awareness training! There are millions of tonnes of asbestos still left in buildings built before 1999.

Examples of workers include (but are not limited to): General maintenance workers; Electricians; Plumbers; Joiners; Painters and decorators; Plasterers; Construction workers; Roofers; Shop fitters; Gas fitters; Heating and ventilation engineers; Demolition workers; Telecommunication engineers; Fire/burglar alarm installers; Computer and data installers; Architects; Building surveyors.

Q. I don’t have the time to do this course.

A. If preventing the range of cancers and illnesses that asbestos can lead to does not persuade you, then you could try arguing with the court judge as to why you could not find 3 hours to comply with the law!

Example asbestos court cases 2019 to 2021: ASAI Construction Ltd fined £30,000. Samer Constructions Ltd fined £25,000. Paul Williams jailed to 14 weeks in Pr*son. Darren Goddard jailed for 4 months.
