Presenter: Lauren Schneider and Lisa Kaplan
In this 4 hour workshop, teaching artists and credentialed teachers Lauren Schneider and Lisa Kaplan will guide educators through the process of how they use the combined gallery tour and studio project to strengthen students’ critical thinking, speaking, and listening skills.
They will demonstrate how they engage students' skills in reading and interpreting visual imagery while providing a format for language acquisition through repetition of terms used in both observing and creating art.
The first part of the workshop will begin with a tour of the Raíces Hermosas exhibit to demonstrate how art exhibits can be a portal into a broad range of core curriculum concepts and connections as well as cross cultural understanding.
We will also deepen our understanding of the power of art and artifacts to tell the story of humanity since the beginning of time.
We will then engage in a hands-on studio activity designed for the Raíces Hermosas project where we apply what we learned in the gallery through creative art.
The second half of the workshop will involve demonstrating and creating a few pieces independent of the exhibit, kinesthetic projects that teachers can use in the classroom for increasing basic math skills and as language arts tools.
A component of this will be teachers working in grade level groups to differentiate the project for their grade level and share out.
